I get mixed up because the colors for ‘added’ and ‘modified’ are the same as for unique words and common words. Can I change that somehow?

You are welcome :)
You can change the color scheme freely. Select Tools – Options – File comparison – Fonts and colors. There you can change all the colors you don’t like. Don’t forget to uncheck the box “Use Added color for unique words and Modified for common words” as it’s checked by default. If you’d like to return to old settings, click Reset to default button.
